ABSTRACT

In this study, nurses above the age of 20 years and working in General Hospitals located in the Gyeongbuk province were enrolled as participant. A survey was conducted to identify the relationship between types of health-eating, level of occupational stress, and degree of quality of life. An effective sample size of 120 was determined, and it was validated as a feasible count to perform the analysis by applying the PLS-SEM. We hypothesized that the physiological and psychological occupational stress levels vary according to functional, mental, and trendy types of health-eating lives and impact the degree of quality of life. This was evaluated using structural models, employing the bootstrapping method using the Smart PLS 3.0. Our results indicate that in the relationship between health-eating types and quality of life, the higher the functional health-eating type, the higher the quality of life. The association between job stress and quality of life showed that the higher the psychological work stress, the more negative the quality of life. Examining the association between the type of healthy eating and the quality of life revealed that the higher the functional health-eating type, the higher the quality of life. As a result of verifying the moderating effect of the difference in working period (less than 3 years/more than 3 years), it was found that the shorter the working period (less than 3 years), the higher the psychological stress.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate the effects of a short term comprehensive life style modification program on glycemic metabolism, lipid metabolism and body composition in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. METHOD: A nonequivalent control group with a pre post test was designed. Data collection was done from October 2003 to June, 2004 at a hospital. Glycemic metabolism was measured by a.c., p.c. and HbA1c, and lipid metabolism was measured by cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Body Composition was measured by body weight, body mass index, waist, measurement waist per hip ratio, body fat, muscle weight and abdominal fat tissue(intra abdominal distance). The Experimental group, which was composed of 29 participants, was educated based on a life style modification protocol at a weekly meeting for 12 weeks and carried out exercise, diet along individual parameters and self monitoring, while 24 participants in the control group received only diet education. RESULT: 1.The experimental group showed a significant lower a.c.(t=2.11, p=.04) and HbA1 c(t=2.65, p=.01) compared to those of the control group. 2. The experimental group showed a significant lower LDL than the results of the control group(t=2.42, p=.02). 3. The experimental group showed a significant lower weight(t=3.09, p=.00), BMI(t=3.01, p=.00), body fat(t=2.94, p=.01) and abdominal fat tissue(t=3.05, p=.01) than those of the control group. CONCLUSION: The results provided evidence for the effectiveness of a short term comprehensive life style modification program composed of exercise, diet, support, self efficacy elevation and self monitoring in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to gather basic data on dietitian's general characteristics, working conditions, job achievement and job satisfaction. Thereby, a formulation can be worked out to improve dietitian's job achievement and satisfaction. The study was conducted during one week period, spanning July 23 to July 30, 1998. The method of the study was to distribute 560 questionnaires to the primary school dieticians working in the city of Tae Jun, located in Choong-Cheong Province. Out of 560 questionnaires that was distributed, 327 were returned. Moreover, 318 out of 327 questionnaires that was returned was valid enough to be processed by the SAS Program. About sixty percent of the respondents(61.1%) indicated that they were between 26 to 30 years old. Moreover, approximately half of the respondents(48.8%) were unmarried. In terms of the level of education, the bachelor's degree was reported as the most common education level(56.3%), while 3.8% of the participants reported achieving graduate degrees. The number of years in working in the profession ranged from 2 to 5 years. Furthermore, approximately 74% of the respondents indicated that, on average, they earned over 800,000(Won) per month. In terms of the type of the school setting, 52.8% of the respondents worked in the urban setting, whereas, 60.0% worked in the rural school setting. Of these schools, about thirty eight percent(38.7%) of the schools were relatively small sized schools(400 students or less ). In terms of dietitian's sense of job satisfaction, the areas that showed relatively high level of satisfaction was in the menu control work(3.90) and purchase control work(3.90). However, appallingly low job satisfaction was indicated in the areas of personnel management (2.96%), and nutritional education and counsel(2.73%). Furthermore, job satisfaction varied greatly depending on age, wage, type of the food service, and type of school. The highest satisfaction was indicated in the areas of supervisory position(3.42), work itself(3.31%), co-workers(3.11). Other facets that led to job satisfaction were periodic wage increase(2.19%) and promotion opportunities(2.79%). In conclusion dietitian's job achievement showed significant correlation with job satisfaction. The study suggests that, in order to improve the overall job satisfaction of the dieticians, it is necessary to improve the working conditions of dieticians in primary schools. Secondly, there is a necessity for improving the status of the dieticians by raising the salary and treating the dieticians with the same level of respect in comparison with teachers or executive officials. Finally, another way of raising the job satisfaction of the dieticians is to provide opportunity for continuing education. So that, they can further their career in their chosen field.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), which causes a characteristic diarrhea in humans and animals, is a strong mucosal immunogen and has powerful mucosal adjuvant activity towards coadministered unrelated antigens. Here we report the different mucosal adjuvanticity of nontoxic LT derivatives, LTS63Y and LTdelta110/112, generated by immunizing through two different mucosal routes. Intragastric (IG) immunization with Helicobacter pylori urease alone resulted in poor systemic IgG and IgA responses and no detectable local secretory IgA, but IG co-immunization with urease and LTdelta110/112 induced high titers of urease-specific local secretory IgA and systemic IgG and IgA, comparable to those induced by wild-type LT. LTS63Y showed far lower adjuvant activity towards urease than LTdelta110/112 in IG immunization, but was more active than LTdelta110/112 in inducing immune responses to urease by intranasal (IN) immunization. LTdelta110/112 predominantly enhanced the induction of urease-specific IgG1 levels following IG immunization, whereas LTS63Y induced high levels of IgG1, IgG2a and IgG2b following IN immunization. In addition, quantitative H. pylori culture of stomach tissue following challenge with H. pylori demonstrated a 90-95% reduction (p < 0.0002) in bacterial burden in mice immunized intranasally with urease using either mutant LT as an adjuvant. These results indicate that the mechanism(s) underlying the adjuvant activities of mutant LTs towards coadmnistered H. pylori urease may differ between the IN and IG mucosal immunization routes.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) is composed of catalytic A and non-catalytic homo-pentameric B subunits and causes diarrheal disease in human and animals. In order to produce a nontoxic LT for vaccine and adjuvant development, two novel derivatives of LT were constructed by a site-directed mutagenesis of A subunit; Ser63 to Tyr63 in LTS63Y and Glu110, Glu112 were deleted in LT delta 110/112. The purified mutant LTs (mLTs) showed a similar molecular structural complex as AB5 to that of wild LT. In contrast to wild-type LT, mLTs failed to induce either elongation activity, ADP-ribosyltransferase activity, cAMP synthesis in CHO cells or fluid accumulation in mouse small intestine in vivo. Mice immunized with mLTs either intragastrically or intranasally elicited high titers of LT-specific serum and mucosal antibodies comparable to those induced by wild-type LT. These results indicate that substitution of Ser63 to Tyr63 or deletion of Glu110 and Glu112 eliminate the toxicity of LT without a change of AB5 conformation, and both mutants are immunogenic to LT itself. Therefore, both mLTs may be used to develop novel anti-diarrheal vaccines against enterotoxigenic E. coli.
